"Feel good about yourself so you can forget yourself"

Sara Sandelin (a member in Kristianstad) and Adelide

Hello my dearest family,

This week has been L O N G but incredible. And I have been loving every minute of it. From waking up at 6 am and running or biking down by the beautiful lake to losing myself in my scriptures. From running from bus to bus to sitting in a lesson and not knowing what anyone is talking about to being able to bear my testimony and give a short part of the lesson in Swedish.
Sister Swenson and Sister Christensen

My testimony has been strengthened in many ways and I am so grateful for that. On my hardest day this week, I woke up and remembered that I had gotten a dear elder from my momma that I had not read yet. I read about Lillie waking up every morning at five am to get ready eat breakfast and pack a lunch all by herself to get ready for dance practice and school. How she never complains she just gets up every morning and keeps pushing forward. Even when she is being teased at school. Even though she is lonely at school. She really does have a tremendous amount of courage and that is EXACTLY what I needed to hear this week. I sat there and cried and then I opened up my scriptures and read D&C 10:4. It says "Do not run faster or labor more than you have strength and means provided to enable you to translate. But be diligent unto the end."
FINALLY GOT BLUEBERRIES!!!
Reading both your letter and this scripture was an answer to my prayers. Reading of my little autistic sister, getting up each morning, never complaining, ready and excited to face the day, and reading this scripture that tells us to not wear ourselves out but just be diligent unto the end. That is what a mission is all about. Being diligent. If I work as hard as I can without wearing myself out, then I will have the strength and energy to keep going. I am so grateful for this promise.

Sister Swenson and I are really good at having fun together while also working hard. Last Pday we went on a "date" and got sushi and gelato. We also remind ourselves that it is okay to take breaks and not wear ourselves out... And we have had the best times. Some mornings we wake up and meditate about our investigators while listening to Michael Ethington Hymns. We have found that Sister Newell's advice truly works. to "Feel good about yourself so you can forget yourself". We planned out a schedule to run four miles twice a week, bike twice a week, and do p90x twice a week. And once you feel good about yourself then the rest of the day it truly is so much easier to forget yourself and get to work. To focus all of your attention on your investigators and their needs. Although, it is hard to forget about yourself when you get fed delicious dinners by your members every night and get fed a desert every night and can't say no! Ha ha ha we really have the best members. They all have gone out of their way to make gluten free and vegetarian food and they are so happy to do it. I feel bad but I am also so grateful.
This was taken in Lund when we slept over at sister Young's and sister Faux's. Taken at 10:00 pm....
We have had amazing teaching experiences this week, but we are off to catch a train to go explore Helsingbörg. Just so you know.... the peanut butter here is actually AMAZING. So that's good cause its like the only thing I eat when we are home hahaha. Also the three stamp letter did get to me!!! I have loved all of the letters and I am so so happy. xoxoxo
The lake that we walk by everyday!

(later that day. . . )ahhh there are so many pictures i dont know what ones to send! But the first one is at the beach and the last two are on the top of the castle!!

Today we went to Helsingborg and met up with our zone leaders. We went to the beach and grilled some salmon that the elders brought and marinated and everything! It was so funny. We went and put our feet in the water. AND you can see DENMARK from the beach! We went to the castle in Helsingborg and paid to go up so we could see everything from the top- It was so awesome and BEAUTIFUL. It was definitely what all p-days should be like.

I haven't gotten to read your emails yet and I still wanted to add more to my letter maybe so I will possibly write again tonight! SORRY!! THere is so much more to say but we have to go! I have some pretty hilarious stories to tell and so much other stuff and ahhhhhH!!!!!!!!! hahahaha hopefully i will get to get on again in some point in the day. xoxoxoxoxooxoxo YOU DON"T EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH YOUR LETTERS HAVE MEANT TO ME THIS WEEK!!!!! holy cow. But it really has been the greatest week. LOVE YOU

OH YA that's what i meant. I knew you were 8 hours behind duhhhh adelide... hahaha i told one of our members that your name was doug and they were like hund??? HAHAHAHAHA they were dying cause they thought your name was DOG. dougie the dog

Also mom will you please tell julie ethington to email me so i have her email? Will you tell her that i wear my black shoes every day and my bag AND my head bands! Everyone is so jealous of the headbands. I am still so grateful for all that she gave me. Also everyone is LOVING the Michael Ethington CD's. I feel so grateful for Julie and what she does for me.

LOVE this letter and loved the poem. I needed to hear these words today. Thanks for always knowing just what will get me through the day. I miss you guys so so so much. The work is busy which is good because it keeps me from thinking to hard about everything. I am grateful that I have been able to look out the window at the beautiful country when times are stressful. It so easily reminds me that Heavenly Father loves me because of this beautiful world and country that i get to live in.. that he created. I see his hand in my life every day. I sometimes picture you walking down cobble stone road in Portugal on your mission doing the same work and dad doing his here. It gives me comfort. Talk to you next week. All my love, prayers, and happiness

First Area = Kristianstad!

Hello!

Sister Christensen and Sister Swenson are going to Kristianstad II
This is going to be short and sweet because I talked to you guys yesterday (which was the best), and also because we are leaving soon... But I just want to say, I LOVE SWEDEN. This is seriously the best mission ever! I love my mission president and his sweet wife. They are so inspiring and I can't wait to get to know them better.
My cute companion is Sister Swensen and she has been training for two months and is now my trainer and she is doing AWESOME. She knows what she is doing and I feel like a puppy just copying her every move. We love working together. She went to Weber State and played soccer there. Our ward branch is amazing- all of the members want to help with missionary work and are so kind to us. We are in the Wennerlunds ward and he was so excited to tell me stories of grandpa. We are having lunch with him tomorrow so he will probably tell me more- haha. We have a lot of investigators right now and have so far in the past 3 days, taught 15 lessons. We were teaching an older couple, and after I bore my testimony in Swedish, the guy smiled and said very slowly, "You are happy, and you know for sure."

My first day of waking up I thought "wait, what am I doing here??" And then as we got going on our day and started teaching these people, I was reminded quickly of what I am doing here and of why I want to be here. I love this little city that I am living in and I love the people so much already. We have a baptism on June 8th which is the day right before we get to go hear President Monson speak! I am doing great and I am grateful to be down here in the warm South! I am happy and I know that for sure. XOXO Love you all.

My Branch at the MTC
Familj!
HOW ARE ALL OF YOU!? You sound great from the letters and I am stoked that you found a new house! Everyone's schedules got changed here at the MTC so that is why our p-day is on Tuesday now! Except for its my last p-day till I get to the field so I guess it's only different for this week. We head out to Sweden a week from today at 3 am!
Our flight plans came! We leave May 7th!
We heard through a lot of different sources that our visa's are here but we won't find out until Friday, so... hopefully it's TRUE! I just got back from the temple which was an amazing experience that I won't forget. I was eating breakfast and I turned around to see Gram smiling at me. I didn't know when I would get to see her and so it took me a little off guard and I jumped up and cried a little. I talked to gram and grandpa for a while which was so awesome and I am so grateful it worked out to see them. I felt like I was home.
I don't have a lot to say because I just wrote not too long ago but I will tell you about our last Sunday. The Young Woman President, Bonnie L. Oscarson came and spoke to us. She was 25 and her husband was 29 when they got called to be mission presidents in Sweden. They had four little kids and she told us of her scary and hard experience but also the most amazing journey she has been on. She said, "I am not saying that I have a favorite mission... but, could I have all those that are going to Sweden stand up?" So all of us got to stand up and then we got to meet her afterwards.
Also that night at our devotional, my district got to be ushers so we got to guide people to their seats and then sit at the front, and one of the sisters in my district said the closing prayer and then two of the missionaries in the other Sweden district did the musical number. So Sunday we were REPRESENTING! It was a lot of fun. At the devotional, Stephen B. Alley spoke and he focused mainly on Alma 26:27. He said there is a growing period in every new experience. The savior stands with open hands, so be joyous, even in your afflictions. He said, "Conform your will to His. Change your heart and do His will, not your will." I know I can be better at this along with many other things, but that is what I love about learning and growing... we get to keep trying, to start over when we need to, and keep working to perfect ourselves by constantly turning towards Christ. I am doing His will, and I love it.
Elder Lambson is Hilarious!
Me and Sister Young
Random thought: Last night we heard this loud yelling so we looked outside our window and about 15 Tongans were doing the Hakka hahaha- what the? None of them had shirts on and they were all barefoot and had those skirt things on- It was hilarious. Well! We are getting all packed up and ready to go this next week! Can't wait to call home next Tuesday and hear your voices. Love you all. I am so grateful for everyone's support. I feel it everyday.
Me and Sister Randall
these elders are going to FINLAND!

Sister D is going to the Netherlands! (She is in our Branch)

Where Has the Time Gone? (week 4)

WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE?

Studying with my comp.

 Hejjjjjjjjj!!!!!

This week FLEW by! I literally feel like I just wrote to you yesterday! Good news: We get our travel plans tomorrow!! But we don't find out if our visas come until a couple days before we leave. . So keep your fingers crossed! We might be getting re-assigned for a bit. Two of  our teachers are leaving tomorrow to go to Hawaii and they wont be back until the day before we leave! And another one is leaving for this next week... We are so sad because we have THE BEST teachers and we love them!! But seriously, I have been watching other districts struggle with their companions, districts, and teachers and I am so so blessed and grateful for what we have.
Our Swede T's!
Last week was pretty rough with the language and getting a little stressed out, but this week has been awesome. There is a quote that says, "Hang in there. It is astonishing how short a time it can take for wonderful things to happen." This is so true. I feel like with every hard lesson, or day, or week, I learn a great deal of humility and love for this work. And when I do that, I am grateful. And sure enough the lessons and days and weeks get better. I loved what you said in your letter Mom about humility. It is so true that we HAVE to go through periods of time in our lives of struggle. If we don't, then we do not humble ourselves and learn to lean on Heavenly Father to help us. Yes the language is hard and no, I can't speak it very well right now... but I will. If I could speak it well now, then I wouldn't learn humility and patience, and I wouldn't learn to rely on the Lord. Everyday I remind myself that life is good. And it truly is. There will always be ups and downs, but to notice the ups and the downs is what is important. The downs help us learn and grow and the ups teach us to be happy and grateful. When we have ups, we need to seek to help those that are having downs. And with the ups and the downs we need to pray to our Heavenly Father with gratitude for the challenges that help us learn to stand on two feet and for the blessings that come when we do.
Temple Day
In class on Saturday our teacher Brother Dunn, told us a story of teaching a lady in Sweden from the Phillipines and her son who has down syndrome. He told us how he had worked with kids with disabilities before his mission and that he knew he needed to be the one to teach this mother and son, and that he needed to tell them of Gods wonderful plan for us. All of us were touched and it was a very spiritual experience. For me, it made me think of the investigators I am going to teach that only I will be able to touch and help because of what I know and of what I have learned and gone through. After his story I started thinking about Lillie and I was out of control crying as I thought of her and our picnics up the canyon and going on hikes together with just me and her. I MISS HER. I want her to tell me her silly stories she has that she would tell me when I picked her up from school. Give her a big bear hug for me!!
I loved the cousins emails this week. I love that we are all teaching the same gospel and that we are all learning how to be strengthened and how to serve in many different ways. Uncle Jeff C. Sent me the nicest letter this week. I needed to hear what he shared with me and I was so grateful to hear from him. He sure knows how nice it is to get mail as a missionary, with having three of his kids out!! I am so excited to hear where Will got his mission call! 7 cousins out at once... we are blessed. I want to start a cousin group email so we can keep in touch throughout our missions. Are their emails all just their first names & then last name? Let me know if you figure that out.
Mom, I loved what you said about desiring to believe. You said, "Desire to belive is my new slogan. I desire to believe. Therefore, I do believe and since I believe, I have faith and since I have faith, I know everything will work out." This was perfect for me to hear this week. We taught an amazing lesson about faith to one of our investigators this week in swedish. He was so worried that he HAD to know it was true and I felt overcome to share those words you shared with me. I got a little chocked up as I told him that even the smallest desire to believe, is a step of faith. Our faith grows as we continue to learn and go through things that test our faith. We don't have to KNOW, we just have to BELIEVE. That's what I loved about Elder Hollands talk and about what you shared with me and about dad's strong belief in only having to believe.

GROWTH. Every day I grow but especially on days that I can appreciate what has helped me grow. This week it was the little things that have helped me grow. When I understood my teacher speaking in swedish, when I read the scriptures and understood what was going on and how I could benefit from what I read. When I thought of Lillie and how I can become more like her. Meek and submissive. When I taught a lesson about faith and felt the burning desire in my heart to believe and to share what I believe.

Sister Adelide

Adelide's letter April 11, 2013

My dearest family,

HOLY PACKAGES!!! You guys made me feel like a queen! I am so grateful for the packages you put together and for all of the mail I have received. I LOVE getting mail. It makes my day 10x better! Wow st george sounded like a blast! I loved that you told me all of the details of your hike in Zions. I can just picture it-- so beautiful. I love hearing of your every day lives and I feel so special to get a letter from my mommy almost every day. I hope you don't feel like you have to write me everyday but I sure do enjoy it!! I feel like your right here with me. Mom, your gift idea of the t-shirts is PERFECT! The girls keep wanting to buy swedish shirts here that are so ugly so they will be so happy when we get the shirts you have made! We are all either a small or a medium :). I am so grateful that you sent me the cousins emails. They are so fun and inspiring to read and it makes me feel like I am truly not doing this work alone. Will you send me some pictures of the family? Like your favorite ones of hen, lil and han and of you and dad of course? I want more pictures to look at!!! As for pictures from me... The cord you sent me will work in Sweden but it wont work on these computers! We have to have a weird SD card reader which I can get at the book store but they are all sold out so I will get on that ASAP. I might just send you my sd card and then you can send it back to me. Let me know what you think will work best, otherwise you might not get any pics from me from the mtc...

Last week during gym time I was doing yoga by myself and some italian sisters asked me if I would teach them so I became really good friends with the italians and i started teaching them yoga! The class went from two sisters one day to ten sisters the next day! Every day at gym more sisters come and I lead a yoga/ abb class. hahaha it is so funny. Everyone that is playing volleyball or basket ball just stares at us like we are so weird but the sisters love it and i LOVE IT! I have also been running a lot and it is so nice to have that time to think. Thanks mom for calling the cafeteria haha there was a huge sign on the door enterance that said "Adelide Christensen GO SEE THE DIETITION" or however its spelled... hahaha so I went in and Diane talked to me and told me that I could eat in this special little room that has way healthy food! I was happy because I have litterally just been eating a banana and peanut butter at every meal. So last night I ate quinua and vegetables. yummmm.

MTC MIRACLES: Ok this is the dumbest story ever but it left me and my companion laughing about it for days so I am going to share it with you. We were both craving these huge ice cream snickers bars and we both decided that we wanted the snickers one instead of twix. So, I swipe my card and of course type in the numbers for the twix... Which I can't eat because I am allergic so my companion was like oh its fine I will just eat the twix and get you a snickers and I was like, no you really don't have to d... ok thanks. So we go in our room and we are eating them so fast because we had class in ten minutes and my companion literally has like one bite left and she says, "this twix bar doesn't even taste like a twix! it even has peanuts in it!" SO I go over and look at it and dun da da dun! IT WAS A SNICKERS hahahahaha So in the end we both got what we wanted and the snickers bar was wrapped in a twix bar! HA. And she didn't even notice until it was almost gone! HAHA we were dying. Truly a miracle.

Adelide's MTC District and another district going to Sweden on the same day. Only 2 Elders!
The work here is still hard but still fun. Everyday we wake up and get to work! Lots of studying and lots of learning. Our teachers will occasionally do funny things like make us walk around our classroom building counting each of our steps in Swedish. haha it was so hilarious- we were all taking huge steps so we didn't have to count as high. They also had us run outside in our skirts and flats and up the stairs and around the building and back to the class room to wake us up. haha then they taught us about stress management which came at the perfect time. We were all getting a littles stressed out with all of the new lessons we will have to be teaching soon. Tomorrow we have to teach 3 times! ahhhh. But, I realized how much I really want to do this work after we taught our investigator yesterday. We went from reading every part of our lesson off of a paper to bringing in notes with only english written on them! We went in with our lesson planned out in english and while we were in there we slowly transfered everything into Swedish. It was an amazing experience and although I know my sentences weren't perfect, i felt the spirit so much stronger. We were able to look at our investigators eyes and really speak to him, slowly and simply but it made all of the difference. The hardest part is that there is so much more that I want to tell him about (even though he isn't a real investigator) but because I don't know all of the swedish to do that, I just have to rely on the words that I know and hope that it will make sense. It is a wonderful experience and I can't wait to teach real investigators in Sweden.

I learn here each day not only how to be a better missionary, but how to be a better person. The girls in my district are all so excited to be mothers, and so am I. We talk often of how this missionary experience will spiritually mature and prepare us to be the mothers that we want to be. I can't imagine becoming a mother without having the experience of serving a mission. I love the girls in my district and we have become so close with each other. I love being able to spiritually learn with them and share our testimonies with each other. This week I have especially become close with the elders and other sisters in the other district. I love the friendships we are creating here as we are adapting to a different lifestyle.

GENERAL CONFERENCE aka an MTC holiday!! It was so amazing to watch conference here at the MTC. So many of the talks spoke directly to me and I loved all of the ones that you guys mentioned to me in your letters. One of my favorite talks was by President Uchtdorf during the Young Womans General Broadcast. READ IT. He talks about our journey here on life. He says, "how is your journey going? Are you doing all that you can to live up to who you want to become? I love asking myself those questions daily. How is my journey going? Am I doing all that I can to live up to who I want to become? Many times, my answer is no. And when it is no, I write down lists of ways that I can improve. This life is about improving. It is about finding our own ways to return back to our Father in Heaven. When I am not doing the best that I can do, I do not become upset with myself. Rather, I look at ways that I can do it differently and try again the next day. I have always loved doing this my whole life and i have been applying it more to my life while I have been on my mission. At the end of Uchtdorf's talk, he says, "It is not your responsibility to convert others, that is the Holy Ghosts responsibility. But it is your responsibility to bare witness of this gospel and to NEVER lower your standards." He also says, "Speak the universal language. That language is love, the language that gets rid of hatred and fear. It is a language of understanding, serving, and comforting." This is exactly what I needed to hear this week. Swedish is hard, and I feel at times that I am the worst in my class. I am struggeling with memorizing and especially with conjugation but, I know that I can speak the universal language of love. And through love, I will be able to conect to the people of Sweden no matter how hard the Swedish language is. I will be able to understand, serve, and comfort the people and let them know that there is a plan for them here on Earth. God commands us to be of good cheer and that is how I want to live always. Cheerfully enjoying every thing that comes my way, no matter how hard or long the road.

I LOVE YOU ALL. I am so grateful for you and your examples in my life. Thank you for your support.

LOVE, Sister Adelide

Our first letter from Adelide!

I can't even start to describe my experience at the MTC. It has been amazing. The first day, I was the first one to my class so I went in and my teachers only spoke in Swedish. I had heard that this would happen and that it stresses out a lot of missionaries but I ABSOLUTELY loved it. I just sat in there and enjoyed not knowing what they were saying but getting so excited to one day be able to speak this beautiful language. My companion is Camille Hauglid (the girl that we had the Swedish party at before we came) and she is so sweet and easy going which is perfect for me. My district is ALL girls (8 of us) and they are all so funny and awesome. I love them. We work hard but we also know how to have fun. The other day we were studying for about two hours and then all of us turned around and looked at each other like: "ya, lets be done with this." so we talked and laughed for another hour. We told our mission president and he told us that he was happy that we got to know each other. Haha- only fun times when you have 8 hilarious girls in one room. The other district is 6 sisters and 2 elders so all in all there are 16 sisters and 2 elders. We are really close with the other district and we all do everything together. The swedish is coming along and we have taught our first investigator five times now!! I still have to use notes but I am able to pray and bare my testimony without looking now and I have memorized "our purpose" in svenska! I have seen Michelle Warner a lot which has been so comforting. The first night she came in and talked to me for a half hour and helped me unpack. I have pretty much seen everyone from OLY- I had just been hanging out with them the week before and now we are all missionaries which is awesome and weird. I saw spencer twice before he left- he is doing great and we got caught up on MTC life. So as you can see... my pday is on Thursday which is why you haven't heard from me, except for I did write home on my second or first day but I am guessing you never got it because you are in SGEEZY livin life.

Easter Sunday was one that I will never forget. Sitting in a room with 4,000 missionaries all partaking of the sacrament and singing "called to serve" together, brought joy to my heart. We heard from Bishop Causee- the bishop presiding over the church, and his cute wife. Sister Causee said: "Pray every day and work hard! You don't want to waste one minute of your mission." I absolutely agree. I have been trying my hardest to not waste one minute. And I have loved every minute of being here. I love my companion. I love the girls in my district. I love my teachers. I love the language. I love my classes. I love the devotionals. I love reading the scriptures, I love preach my gospel. I love the service. I love the learning. I love teaching. I love the gym. I love the people. I love my new friends. I love seeing the mountains. I love getting letters. I love the uncomfortable times that have helped me grow. I love the positive attitudes that surround me. I love singing the army of heleman at every meeting. I love the encouragment. I love the strength. I love the feelings that I feel as I study and ponder and pray. I love learning about christ and I love reminding myself of why I am here. Most of all I love the constant spirit that I feel throughout the day. I was worried at first that I wasn't feeling the spirit as much as I should be because I have always heard of the "special spirit you feel at the MTC." And one of my teachers, brother Bloomfield, told me: If you have grown up in a spiritual home then you are used to constantly being able to feel the spirit, so when you get here, you still feel good but its not an extra spirit that you feel. Kids who don't grow up in a home that is constantly filled with love and the spirit, think that the spirit here at the MTC is so amazing, which it is, but I am so grateful to have been raised in the home that I was raised in where the gospel was the center of everything we did. Family scripture study, family prayer, family dinner together etc. Our home wherever it may be, has always been filled with the spirit because of our family and what we believe.

Bishop Causee said: "You may think that you can't do this, but you know that with the Lords help you can do it! And you will LOVE it." This is so true. I have not broken down of feeling homesick or of feeling like this work is TOO hard yet but I know that those days will come. I also know that this work would be impossible to do without the Lord but because I have the Lords help, I can do it and I will love it. I loved the constant reminder throughout the Easter day of my savior and of his love towards each of us. To remember what He has done for me and what I can do to become more like Him and become closer to Him. On Easter night, we had a devotional by Sherry Dew, and she spoke on having our main focus be on the Lord and how His message is able to change people. She said "Who is influencing you and who are you influencing." I loved her message because it made me think of who I am, who I can influence, and most importantly of all of the amazing people who have influenced me one way or another and have helped me get to where I am now.

I love this adventure and I would not want to be any where else. I miss you all but I am so grateful to be here. I want every girl who has thought of going on a mission, to go. I have only been here for a week and it is hard work but I can already see the blessings from going on a mission. Everyone and anyone can do this work if they have a strong desire to serve and if they are worthy to serve. Jag alskar dig!

Farewell Talk

Hello brothers and sisters, I have been called to serve in Stockholm Sweden! Sweden, according to President Monson, “is a picturesque garden of beauty, but also a choice people. It is where you find members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints who are willing to serve god and keep His commandments.” He also said, “Every time I return to Sweden, it is like receiving a charge to my spiritual batteries.” I can’t wait to experience that.

When I was a Junior in high school, I went through a crisis over knowing who I was. I felt like I had quit everything I had started and I couldn’t break in to new clubs or positions that might offer my life some structure and purpose. I felt like I had no talents. I quit piano when I was younger to start dancing; I quit dance to do cheer and then I quit cheer after my sophomore year. My Junior year left me with nothing to do outside of work and school, so I decided to try out for dance company; I didn’t make it. I was sad but knew that being sad wouldn’t lead me anywhere so almost immediately I decided to run for Student Body Senate, failing to make it past the primaries. In another split-second decision I decided, okay I guess I will try out for cheer again! I was shocked when I opened that letter to discover that I didn’t make cheer either, even though I had made it as a sophomore. My pride was hurt and it was confirmed to me: I was not good at anything.

After we are knocked down so many times, it is hard to remember who loves us and who will always love us and be there for us. It is hard to pick ourselves back up and seek for new ways to find happiness.

For Christmas two years ago my dad made me and my siblings beautiful wooden full-length mirrors for our bedrooms. In the letter he wrote to me, he said: “Mirrors are sometimes thought of in relationship to vanity. Another word for vanity is meaninglessness. If you look in your mirror only to see what you look like, you may find that your life lacks depth. But if you look in the mirror because you like who you are on the inside and you like the direction of your life, it will never be in vain. Always remember to take others into account when you see yourself looking back from that mirror at who you are.” As I stood in my room looking in the mirror, I saw my mom standing next to me. I saw my young woman leaders, I saw my dear friend Amy Cox who lost her dad a couple of years ago, in fact I saw so many of my close friends. I saw Julie Ethington, Diane Adair, my aunt Kristin and many other strong women who have known struggle, loss and disappointment – women who have been strengthened by their trials, who, when they could have given up, kept moving forward with trust in the Lord. These women know they are daughters of God. They truly walk in the Lord’s footsteps.

I don’t know who wrote this quote but I absolutely love how fitting it is for each of these women. It says; “There is an inner beauty about a woman who believes in herself, who knows she is capable of anything she puts her mind to. There is a beauty in the strength and determination of a woman who follows her own path, who isn’t thrown off by obstacles along the way. There is beauty about a woman whose confidence comes from experiences, who knows she can fall, pick herself back up, and move on.”

In a class I was taking, I heard the story of a girl named Rachel who has advanced Muscular Dystrophy; she is wheelchair bound with only a short time to live. One day she was in a Young Women’s class sitting next to her mother and they were learning about trials and how each of us will go through trials and some of us will go through significant trials in our lives. Rachel turned to her mother and sincerely asked, “mom, what is our trial?”
Because Rachel focused so much on what she was grateful for, she overlooked challenges that would interfere with the average person’s happiness.

I received a 2004 General Conference talk written by Elder Dennis E Simmons from Julie Ethington when I did not make cheer that said: “Men accomplish marvelous things by trusting in the Lord and keeping his commandments, by exercising faith even when they don’t know how the Lord is shaping them.” In 2 Corinthians 12:9 it says “My grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Simmons goes on to say; “Our god will deliver us from ridicule and persecution, but if not, our god will deliver us from sickness and disease, but if not, he will deliver us from loneliness, depression, or fear, but if not, our God will deliver us from threats, accusations, and insecurity, but if not, he will deliver us from death or impairment of loved ones, but if not, we will trust in the Lord.” “Our God will see that we receive justice and fairness, but if not, he will make sure that we are loved and recognized, but if not, we will receive a perfect companion and righteous and obedient children, but if not, we will have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing that if we do all we can do, we will, in his time and in his way be delivered and receive all that he has.”

After falling so many times, I decided to pick myself back up and run Cross Country. Here, I struggled too. I had an ongoing hip injury that made it hard for me to run, but I will never forget the happiness I felt from finishing a race and the lessons that I had learned from trying again and again. I will never forget the friendships I made in that group that I wouldn’t have made otherwise, and the opportunity to run with my brother as we cheered each other, Henry always pushing me to keep going.

Two summers ago our whole family hiked into Henry’s Fork Lake. From there my dad took me and Henry and Hannah and my friend Scuba on an expedition to climb King’s peak, but we got a late start and by the time we made it to Gunsite Pass, it was too late in the day to make the peak. So this last summer, with a little better planning, we made a second attempt. When we got to Anderson’s (which is the pass right before you make the long scramble to the top), I was not doing well. I was tired, I felt sick from the elevation and I had no energy, but felt too sick to my stomach to eat or drink. I remember looking up and seeing my dad and brother way ahead of me, which frustrated me so I yelled to my dad, “how many more miles?” I also hoped he would notice how far behind I was and wait for me. He responded, “It only gets harder from here.” This was not encouraging. But I put my head down and kept moving my legs slowly and when I looked up again, my dad had walked down to me and he was smiling. He hugged me and said, “the view at the top will make it all worth it.” At that moment I turned around and saw how far we had come and I was overwhelmed with the beauty of the place and distance we had travelled. I have since thought a lot about how true these words are in relation to our journey of life. Sometimes it feels like a very long haul. It is exhausting and often very discouraging and easy to lose hope. If we let this discouragement cloud our judgment, if we lose hope, we may fail to notice the beauty around us, we miss the silver lining around the edges of difficulty in our lives. If we take a step back from the trials in our lives and look at how far we have come, if we consider how much we have been given, we can see how truly beautiful life is. When Joseph Smith writes about his miserable experience in Liberty Jail, in sections 121 and 122 in the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord tells him to be patient and endure well and the suffering will seem like a small moment in the eternal scheme of things. He then gives Joseph a list of “ifs”: If you are called to pass through tribulation, if you are accused of all manner of false accusations, if your enemies fall upon you, if you are torn from the side of your wife and children, if you are cast into a pit, or if the hands of murderers and sentence of death pass upon you, if you are cast into the deep, if the billowing surge conspire against thee, if fierce winds become your enemy, if the heavens gather blackness and all the elements combine to hedge up the way and above all if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou my son that all these things shall give thee experience and be for thy good. The Son of Man had descended below them all. Art thou greater than he? He then gives this simple but profound advice: “Therefore hold on.”

When hiking back to our car the next day after our successful assent, I was moving even slower than the day before, with blisters all over my feet and a heavy pack on my back. Everyone was far ahead of me. I was trying to notice the beauty around me and to appreciate this time with my family, but I became discouraged again. About a mile from the car, I was at the end of my rope and then I looked up to see Henry running towards me with no pack on his back, he lifted mine from my shoulders and not only walked with me the rest of the way to the car but he talked to me and told me he was proud of me, and that I was close – I could make it!

Sometimes we cannot do it alone and we don’t need to do it alone. Sometimes when we are struggling, we need a guy like Henry to lift the weight off of our back. And when we have extra strength like Henry, we need to look to others to see what they might need instead of cooling our feet in the river while we wait for them to catch up. Thank you Henry for always teaching me how to be more like our Savior.

In President Uchtdorf’s conference talk, “The Merciful Obtain Mercy,” he says: “When our hearts are filled with the love of God, we become kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God for Christ’s sake forgave us. The pure love of Christ can remove the scales of resentment and wrath from our eyes, allowing us to see others the way our Heavenly Father sees us: as flawed and imperfect mortals who have potential and worth far beyond our capacity to imagine. Because God loves us so much, we too must love and forgive each other.”

Christ came to this earth and suffered for our sins so that we don’t have to do it alone. When we are sad and lonely, when we feel like there is no way that we can endure through the trials of our individual lives, let us remember that Christ descended below it all. He knows our pain. He paid the price for our sins and all we have to do in return is turn to him, turn away from the things that separate us from his love, no matter where we are or what we have done, Christ and Heavenly Father love us; they want to help us see the world from their perspective, they want us to see ourselves through their eyes.

May we remember the story of Rachel and look past our trials as she looks past hers, too grateful for what she has to notice her own predicament. May we be kind and serve those around us like Henry. And may we realize our potential and worth and be strong through the trials we face.

There is nothing else that I would rather be doing than to leave to serve my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by serving the people of Sweden. I want people to feel the comfort that I have felt in my struggles, I want families to know that they can be together forever, and that there is a plan for us, a plan made up of simple truths centered in love. I know that my mission will be a wonderful experience. I also know it will be hard. But like anything hard in life, I will always be able to choose how to endure. I get to decide to learn patience and endure well or to feel sorry for myself and wish I was someone else somewhere else. I know that I will return home strengthened physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

I am grateful to be a part of a family with 5 cousins serving missions at the same time. Their letters have been the greatest preparation for a mission that I could ask for. My cousin Meisha, who is serving in the Phillipines, shared a story that touched my heart as I felt the true joy of missionary work. She said: “We were sitting outside their small bamboo home on a fallen tree log and I was talking to the 17 year old, Jezrell. There are always kids running around in their area and I was asking if there were kids his age. We talked for a while and then he got up to go somewhere. It was starting to get dark and sister Abarabar sat talking in the twilight when a group of teenage boys started walking towards us…. Jezrell had rounded up all his pals to come listen to us. We both looked at each other and tried to stifle our laughs as 5 teenage boys sat down to hear the message of the restored gospel. We taught, they listened and I don’t know if they will be receptive but as I listened to our young investigator bare a simple and plain testimony of the gospel to his friends, I was filled with joy.”

I have received a lot of attention because I am serving in the land of my forefathers, the land where my father and grandfather served. I am so excited to seal this bond with my dad as I learn the customs and traditions of the lovely Swedish people, just as he did. But I would be ungrateful if I didn’t recognize the tradition of my mother’s faithful missionary service. I am named after a beautiful Portuguese woman that my mother loved into the church 25 years ago. This woman, Adelide Morera joined the church with her husband Alvaro. While my mother was teaching her, she had a daughter who she named Sara (no h) after my mother. I know that my mother helped Adelide and Alvaro change their lives. They are still active in the church today. I have been so blessed to grow up with this story of my mother’s missionary success as part of my identity. She has loved me and served me selflessly my whole life. Lillie you are so full of joy and I love that about you. Hannah, you have always shown me love and support in all that I do. I especially love how forgiving you are to me when I do wrong.

I believe with all of my heart that this is what I should be doing. I love this gospel and I am so grateful for it and for each of you. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
